A little boy cried out ‘daddy’ after his father was Tasered by police in shocking viral footage.
Cops have since charged the man, Desmond Ziggy Mombeyarara, with a number of offences since the viral online video surfaced.
They then use a Taser on him and the boy screams more as his dad falls to the ground during the incident in Stretford, Greater Manchester on Wednesday night.
Officers then tell him to put his hands behind his back in the scene which was captured on camera by an eyewitness.
In a statement Greater Manchester Police said that shortly before 11pm officers saw a vehicle being driven unsafely at high speed in Stretford.
“The vehicle was stopped and the driver, Mombeyarara, was arrested and subsequently charged with: two counts of resisting a constable in the execution of their duty, one count of driving at excess speed, one count of not having vehicle insurance, one count of being unfit to drive through drink, one count of failing without reasonable excuse to co-operate with a preliminary test, one count of failing to stop when required to do so, one count of unnecessary travel.”
Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham released a statement asking for an urgent and independent review to be carried out.
GMP said the incident has been reviewed by the GMP Professional Standards Branch and that they have voluntarily referred this matter to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
Superintendent Mark Kenny, said: “We are aware of public concern regarding this arrest and I want to reassure the public that this matter is being reviewed and treated seriously.
“In addition we have voluntarily referred this matter to the IOPC.”
The clip begins with two officers trying to restrain the man while the boy cries in the background.
Police order him to release his hands as they continue to clash with him.
He is filmed saying ‘leave my child’ before a loud crack is heard as the Taser is deployed and he falls to ground with a bang.
The woman filming says “Oh my god he’s got a child” as the camera zooms to reveal the youngster in his arms.
The man lies on the floor as one of the officers shouts: “Put your hands behind your back, get your hands behind your back”.
As the clip ends, the youngster is carried off by one of the officers and the officer continues shouting at the father.
The dramatic scene was caught on camera by local eyewitness Dionne Allman who shared the video on Facebook.
She said: “After this video was taken I continued to film and the police officer continued to Taser the man several consecutive times whilst his son was still witnessing this all happen.”
The clip has been shared more than 3,000 times.
Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham has issued a statement in a tweet saying “The Mayor has issued a statement in response to a recent video showing a police incident involving gmpolice officers.”
The statement says: “On Friday morning (8 May 2020), a video was brought to my attention of a police incident at a petrol station in Greater Manchester involving two police officers, a man, a child and the use of a taser. (sic).
“I was concerned about what I saw and immediately asked GMP to look into it and provide me with an explanation of what had happened.
“From what I have been told, it would appear that the officers were right to apprehend the individual who was putting his child and others at risk by his actions.
“He has subsequently been charged.
“But it is not at all clear that the level of force used in this instance, particularly in front of a child, was proportionate or justified and that is why I have asked for an urgent and independent review to be carried out.”
