Cambuslang town centre set to benefit from Council cash boost

Plans to revitalise Cambuslang’s beleaguered town centre have taken a significant step forward after a huge cash boost.

Cambuslang community council has been awarded £620,000 by South Lanarkshire Council to install new pavements in the town and improve street furniture, including the railings on Main Street.

The town is one of 10 across South Lanarkshire to be awarded a share of the local authority’s £2.5 million Town Centre Regeneration Fund.

The cash for Cambuslang will allow the community council to progress phase one of the environmental improvements included in its Town Centre Strategy & Action Plan , improving the pavements from Greenlees Road to West Coats Road.

Additional proposals, including plans for a civic plaza in the town, will form phase two of the proposed works, which collectively will cost £1.4m.

John Bachtler, chairman of the community council, told the Reformer: “We are pleased with the award, which allows us to make a start on the regeneration strategy for Cambuslang town centre.

“The Main Street is desperately in need of investment, and we can at last do something about getting a decent pavement that is safe and attractive, similar to what we see in the centres of Glasgow and Rutherglen.

“Once we get the formal notification of the award, we’ll be getting straight to work.

“The first stage will be to get professional designs drawn up for a new streetscape which we can discuss with businesses and the wider community.”

John added: “It’s a great opportunity and I’m confident many people in the community will be delighted to see investment going into a much-needed new safe pavement surface in the town centre.”

The Reformer has regularly reported on concerns about the decline of Cambuslang Main Street in recent years, with many shop owners hitting out over the state of pavements, a lack of repairs and parking problems.

It is hoped the improved town centre layout will attract more people to Main Street and its businesses.

Michelle Farmer, vice-chair of the community council, says she is optimistic that the improvements will aid existing businesses and attract new companies to the town.

The community council says a credit union or pop up bank could go some way to filling the gap in services

She said: “We have spent more than a year developing a town centre strategy.

“It has ambitious objectives because we feel that Cambuslang deserves to be commercially successful and a more attractive place to work and live.

“This award is only a beginning; we will need to get much more investment from other sources to be successful.

“Of course, the investment will only be worthwhile if it encourages new businesses to come to Cambuslang and if more people use the shops and services on the Main Street.”

South Lanarkshire was allocated £2.5 million from a £50 million Scottish Government fund to create “transformational” change in the country’s town centres.

Funds have to be committed by March next year and spent by September 2020 otherwise the council would need to return unspent money to the Scottish Government.

Cambuslang received the largest share of the available cash. Other awards agreed included a social housing project in Hamilton and a space for business start-ups in East Kilbride.

Councillor John Anderson, chairman of the South Lanarkshire’s community and enterprise committee said: “We had a tremendous response to this from groups right across South Lanarkshire, and there was a huge amount of thought and creativity put into the bids.

“Inevitably, some will be disappointed, but it may well be that there are other ways some of them can be helped.

“There was a finite amount of money and the officers put a great deal of work into a very organised process to determine the ten successful projects, and we are excited about the way that these will make a really positive impact on communities in a range of areas.”
