Meghan Markle and Harry were ‘wrong’ to hide Archie away – ‘What have they got to hide?’

Meghan and Prince Harry returned home from an official royal visit to Africa earlier this month – and were praised for taking their newborn son Archie Harrison, born on May 6, with them. But, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have come under fire for originally “hiding” their baby son away from the public. Speaking to Express.co.uk, royal author, Angela Levin, who has recently added new chapters to her book, ‘Harry: A Biography of a Prince’, questioned the privacy decisions both Prince Harry and Meghan made surrounding baby Archie.

She said: “I think it was very wrong they hid baby Archie away. They didn’t let people appear at the christening, even one press representative.

“I think it is wrong that they don’t say who the godparents are. I think it was wrong they wouldn’t say where they were.

“You think ‘what have they got to hide?’ Taxpayers pay their money so the royals can live a life of tremendous luxury, it’s not easy.

“It is very difficult being a royal and their privacy is taken away from them. But, it is pros and cons isn’t it? They live in castles.

Royal author, Angela Levin

“They can get access to anybody they want to in any area that interests them, whether it is the army, whether it is fashion, whether it is cookery books, landmines. You have access to the top person who will enable you to fulfil what you would like to do. That comes at a prize.”

Details around the birth of Archie were kept secret and his christening was also kept behind closed doors, sparking anger among some royal fans.

Ms Levin did note the royal tour in Africa did give Meghan and Prince Harry a chance to show baby Archie off to the world.

She said: “Everybody was cooing over the baby, we saw him much longer, than if there had been a formal photoshoot. It all seemed very, very positive.”

Ms Levin explained how Prince Harry not only wanted to introduce his newborn son to Africa but also show his wife, Meghan, more of the area.

She said: “He said a few weeks before that he went away that he couldn’t wait to show Meghan more aspects of Africa.

“They went after their second date and they stayed in Botswana, she stayed with him, sleeping under the stars. And they went back again the following year for three weeks.

“I think he wanted to show here more broadly what Africa was like, and he wanted to introduce baby Archie to Africa, which is incredibly sweet.”

It comes as the Duchess of Sussex has revealed how she truly felt since becoming a royal and a mother during an emotional interview.

The interview is part of the documentary, ‘Harry & Meghan: An African Journey’, filmed by broadcaster Tom Bradby during Meghan and Harry’s tour to Africa.

In the clip, Meghan is asked about the “impact on your physical and mental health of all the pressure that you clearly feel under”.

The Duchess of Sussex said: “I would say…look any woman, especially when they are pregnant, you are really vulnerable and so that was made really challenging.

“And then when you have a newborn, you know? And especially as a woman it’s really, it’s really a lot. So you add this on top of just trying to be a new mum or trying to be a newlywed it’s…”

Meghan continues speaking about her emotional state, adding “not many people” have checked whether she was truly ok.

She says: “Well, I guess, and also thank you for asking, but not many people have asked if I’m ok, but it’s a very real thing to be faint through behind the scenes.”

The episode will air on Sunday at 9pm on ITV, and will not only cover Meghan’s struggle to cope with the attention she has been receiving from the media and the public ever since she became a member of the Royal Family.

According to an ITV spokesman, the documentary will heavily focus on Meghan and Harry’s charitable work but also on their difficulties as a family seeking privacy under the public spotlight.

During their visit of Africa, Harry and Meghan visited South Africa, Angola, Malawi, and Botswana, but not all together.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex briefly split their tour while Harry went further north to visit Angola and Malawi, and Meghan stayed in South Africa.

During the 10-day tour of Africa, Prince Harry followed in the steps of his mother, Diana, with work on clearing land mines and HIV awareness.

The royal visit was an official residence arranged by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and ran from September 23 until October 2.

On their trip, the pair also met with Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Graça Machel, widow of the late President Mandela, President Lourenço of Angola, President Peter Mutharika of Malawi, and President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa.
