A woman has died in a hit-and-run in Bolton.
The tragedy happened on Chorley New Road just after midday on Friday (November 13).
An Audi hit the woman near Bolton School in the Heaton area of the town.
The driver did not stay at the scene, police said.
A helicopter was seen circling overhead as officers searched the area.
No arrests have been made. Investigations are ongoing.
A witness, who was travelling down Chorley New Road in a van told the Manchester Evening News: “It was shocking.
“They shot away in the car.
“They never even stopped.”
No further details about the woman have been released by police.
At 2.50pm, the road remained closed both ways between the junctions with Park Road and Chorley Old Road, close to Queen’s Park.
A cordon is in place, with large emergency service presence – including police, paramedics and fire crews.
Transport chiefs urged people to avoid the area.
In a statement GMP said: “Police were called at 12.05pm today (Friday November 13) to reports of a collision involving a black Audi and a pedestrian on Chorley New Road in Bolton.
“The pedestrian suffered serious injuries and sadly passed away at the scene despite the best efforts of emergency services.
“The Audi failed to remain at the scene.
“No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing.”
The force is appealing for anyone with information to urgently come forward.
