Woman holding threw up and urinated in street before spitting in officer’s face

A drunken thug who threw up and urinated in the street, verbally used a police officer then spat in her face has been jailed.

Officers found Ayesha Mervyn lying outside a McDonald’s restaurant surrounded by concerned onlookers.

The 21-year-old staggered away, clutching a bottle of prosecco and wine.

Mervyn refused to provide details to police before urinating in the city’s Piccadilly Circus, court heard.

The drunkard was then arrested for being drunk and disorderly, the Manchester Evening News reports.

Mervyn spat in one of the officer’s faces soon after.

She pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly; and assaulting an emergency worker. Mervyn was sentenced to 20 weeks, suspended for 18 months.

Prosecuting, Gareth Hughes said officers were patrolling at around 9pm on March 2 when they spotted Mervyn on the floor.

“The officer saw members of the public surrounding her, there were grazes on her knees and she was being sick on the floor,” Mr Hughes said.

“She had a bottle of Prosecco and rose wine with her and her hair was stuck to her face.

“She was then sick in front of a shop window and it was clear that she was not in control of what she was doing.

“Her words were slurred, she could not stand and she was verbally aggressive towards the officers, refusing to provide her details.”

“One of the officers had hold of her right arm and then the defendant turned towards her and spat directly into her face, with the spit going into her hair, down the left side of her head and into her eye,” Mr Hughes added.

“She was taken to the floor by the other officers while this officer attempted to get spit out of her eye.

“Members of the public ran over handing the officer tissues and antibacterial wipes.

“She also said there was an excessive amount of saliva dangling down from her hair and face.”

Mervyn also made an unrepeatable sexual comment towards the officer.

In a statement read to the court, the officer said: “I have never been spat at, nor have I been assaulted in my career before.

“She spat at me in front of numerous members of the public, I found it degrading and embarrassing.

“It is the lowest form of physical abuse and it will have a long standing impact on my emotional state.

“I would rather a punch to the face than being spat at.

“I was trying to help her and this is how I was treated.”

Mervyn was said to have previous convictions – including two assaults on police officers; a public order offence; and shoplifting.

In mitigation, defence lawyer Stephen Connor said his client had a difficult upbringing, in which she was subjected to exploitation and abuse.

“These issues need to be addressed – she needs a form of therapy to help her to come to terms with these issues,” Mr Connor said.

“There is genuine remorse.

“She is thoroughly ashamed and embarrassed of her actions and has apologised directly to the officer concerned.”

Sentencing, District Judge Jack McGarva said: “Listening to what the prosecutor outlined in court should make you feel thoroughly ashamed of yourself.

“You did what you did to the officer who was actually there to protect you from yourself – to spit in her face like that is utterly disgusting.

“How would you feel if somebody had done that to you?”

Mervyn, of Highfield Road, was also sentenced to 20 days of rehabilitation activity requirements; ordered to pay £250 compensation to the officer; and made subject of a 20 week curfew.
